Assuming you read and write daily, you’re well on your way to supercharging your results, both personally and professionally.
However, there’s still a missing piece.
The Third Pillar
The third pillar of the intelligence trifecta is the ability to speak clearly.
We use verbal communication constantly, yet we rarely think about how effective, or ineffective, it really is.
Accents, up to a point, can be undesirable.
It’s important to preserve your culture and identity, but if your accent makes it hard for people to understand you, it becomes a barrier.
If you often have to repeat yourself, because others either can't hear or understand you, the issue might be your volume, clarity, or accent.
Barriers of Effective Speech
- Crutch words: "uhm" and "ah"
- Filler words: "you know" and "like"
- Curse words (unless used for humour or emphasis)
- Lack of vocal variety
How to Get Better
The best medicine at times might be the toughest to swallow.
But recording yourself, and watching yourself speak, can help you overcome many barriers to effective communication.
Are you speaking up? If not, start now, and you’ll improve faster than you think.
