Stephen Covey presents readers of the 7 habits of Highly Effective People with an exercise.
Imagine a funeral, not just any funeral, but your own funeral.
Envision it and describe it in as much detail as you can.
- Who is there.
- What do they say about you.
- What are your most important accomplishments.
It’s difficult to think about ourselves in this situation, but the benefits are evident.
This exercise encourages us to “begin with the end in mind.”
It forces us to think of the long-term before beginning the journey.
If considered carefully, this approach can have many benefits:
- Minimises regret in old age.
- Ensures we are on the right path
- Helps us realise what is important
With these things clearly outlined, it becomes easier to reverse-engineer from the end goal to today's actions, and to make any necessary course corrections.
